Playing Mahjong

      Playing Mahjong

Summary: Mahjong (麻将) is a popular Chinese tile-based game. Although it has different variations around the world, the basic rules are the same and easy to learn. Before starting, players decide on the stakes and distribute tiles accordingly. This article explains how to play Mahjong, as well as its scoring system.

Objective: The primary objective of Mahjong is to be the first player to form a legal “mahjong,” which consist of four sets of three tiles and a pair.

Equipment: In a regular game of Mahjong, there will be 136 tiles consisting of 36 bamboos, 36 characters, 36 circles, 12 dragons, and 16 wind tiles.

Preparation: To start the game, all tiles must be thoroughly shuffled and separated into 4 walls of 17 stacks. Each player then draws 13 tiles from the wall, leaving the other 24 tiles in the center as the “living wall.”

The Play: During their turn, each player can either draw a tile from the living wall or pick up a discarded tile. After drawing a tile, the player may declare a “pong,” “chow,” “kan,” or “mahjong” and discard.

Pong: Pong is a set of three identical tiles. When declaring pong, the player places the set of three tiles face up on the table and immediately claims the fourth tile from the living wall.

Chow: Chow is a set of three consecutive numbers in the same suit. When declaring chow, the player can steal the middle tile of the consecutive set from another players discard in order to complete the set.

Kan: A kan is a set of four identical tiles. When declaring kan, the player can claim an extra tile from the dead wall or the living wall as compensation.

Mahjong: When a player has a complete mahjong set, they can declare mahjong and win the round.

Scoring System: Depending on the variation of the game, tiles can be worth different points. For instance, a winning mahjong may be worth 5 points, a pong may be worth 2 points, a chow may be worth 1 point, and dragon, wind, and flower tiles may all have specific point values.

Conclusion: Mahjong is a game that has been around for centuries and is still incredibly popular today. It is easy to learn and can be quite exciting if you are familiar with the scoring rules and the strategy behind forming mahjong.
